Effectvie Communication

Listening

Listening is the most effective communication skill, which is even more important than expression. We usually talk more, listen less.

The process of listening

Hear -> Listen -> Comprehend -> Feedback -> Record

3F Communication rule (Structured listening)

Facts: collect information and data. (verbal)

Feeling: understand feelings of the other, have empathy. (visual, vocal)

Focus: dig into the needs and requests from the other party, actively interact with them.

Expression

The Minto Pyramid Principle is a method for structuring expression, helps the audience understand and remember your message.

Amazon 6-pager

The 6-pager memo concept requires presenters to create a written memo that is up to 6 pages and written in narrative form. This forces the author to think deeply about the topic and present ideas in a logical order. It also allows the reader to take in the information at their own pace and have detailed discussions.

The 6-pager memo includes seven main sections:

  • Introduction — Explains the background and purpose of the report.
  • Goals — Lists the key success metrics upfront. How to measure the achievement?
  • Tenets — Outlines the relevant business principles and values. What is the strategy? What ist the benefit?
  • State of the Business — Describes the current situation of the business.
  • Lessons Learned — Details past events and what was learned from them.
  • Strategic Priorities — Provides a detailed plan for achieving the earlier mentioned success metrics.
  • Appendix — Includes additional data, tables, documents, and context.
